Fort Stockton, Texas, October 8, 2009

I have to say, thank goodness for Microsoft’s ability to automatically type in the date. Otherwise we wouldn’t have a clue as to what day it is.

We went to a fabulous quilt store in Kerrville! OH MY GOODNESS! I had so much fun. BC went and got gas, washed Bart and looked for a post office to no avail and found an interesting cemetery. I had a great time. What a great place. You know, I should have taken advice from my friend Joan Parks and packed a sewing machine. Sigh….

We got on I10 and drove towards west Texas. Can you imagine that the speed limit is 80mph? Whoa! We pulled off to see the Sonora Caverns and the 2 lane yellow line road is 70mph. You can really make some time doing 80.

The Sonora Caverns were interesting. BC did the same sneaky picture opportunity he did at Mt. Rushmore. Here they are? The low light made it tough to get good pictures.

Evidently people tent and RV camp there. We were not able to take the 90 minute tour, but we did have lunch at a tent site. The wind was blowing like a son of a gun. We kept our napkins in our pockets.

Yes Margaret, that is Bison Honey Peppered Jerky!! Mmm, Mmm, Good.

The scenery is so beautiful. Just so beautiful. Nothing as far as the eye can see.

We decided not to take the cut off to Iraan. We weren’t sure of the welcome.

However, we did stop at the Fort in Fort Stockton. Well, wouldn’t you know big things are happening here! They are in the middle of renovating the museum and bc and I were right there assisting. We had a huge discussion about where the iron horse and man/dummy should stand in regards to the “flow” of visitors. Did you know that even if you are left handed, (BC) you still hold the reins and mount a horse from the right? And this is important in the museum display. BC helped them move the iron horse all around. What fun. So, if any of you are in Fort Stockton on October 17, 2009, please go to the museum opening and see the handiwork wraught by bc and gc.

While on the road I think we may have seen the BBOY. I was driving, so I’m not quite sure. In any case, there were 2 huge semis with very large objects, covered with tarps driving down I10. They had railroad car wheels on the bottom of the big “object”. Now, because I was driving I didn’t notice if there was a piece of yarn connecting the 2 trucks…. But I gotta tell you, if this was the BBOY…. It is huge! But, just in case this wasn’t the BBOY, we will keep looking.

Our hotel here is nice. Well, after we asked for a different room from the first one they gave us. It was out back and people were doing construction in the room next to us and we didn’t really like their music. In any case, we are overlooking the pool; we have our own picnic table and large smoke ashtray. The guys next to us are drinking bud lights and BBQing. BC did muse, “why didn’t we bring a BBQ along?” Please refer to the second paragraph regarding the sewing machine.

Now, if we could just get rid of this one last pesky fly, all would be right with the world.

We love you all and hope all is well with you. bc and gc.

P.S. This Economic Update Just In From Texas:

It appears inflation has struct the Lone Star State. The Five and Dime has had to increase prices on some items to 25 cents!!!!!!!!!!

  1. Geneva, you are the master of words. Richard is right, you really should write a book. We love reading about your adventures (what boring lives we must lead to look forward to reading your posts each night, lol- just kidding). In all seriousness(is that even a word?), I will be sad when your journey is over because I really have enjoyed your vacation adventure. It is so neat following along as you run into new quilt shops (the same way I feel about unknown thrift stores) and see the awesome pictures of such beautiful scenery; even the cemetary pictures open new windows into society. Thank you for the last few weeks, it has been a blast. Every time you post a picture with lakes, rivers, etc. Richard still keeps saying: "Did they fish there?". And I keep telling him: "No, honey, I doubt it". Poor boy-he thinks people should try to fish every body of water they run across. Take care, have fun, and drive safe. -Ann
