Shreveport, Louisiana, October 3, 2009
We’re in the South. Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana are southern states. They drive easy, smoke a lot, and are really laid back people.
We started out this morning in Vicksburg, MS. Vicksburg is the home to the “Gibraltar” of the Civil War. We went to the Vicksburg National Memorial Park and saw the video. When you look at Vicksburg today it is amazing to think that in 1863 the entire city was under siege. The rebels vs. the federalists. General Grant (later President Grant, born 4-27 the same day as bc) did an incredible job of surrounding the city of Vicksburg and then doing a stalemate. On July 4th, 1863 the rebels surrendered. It was the beginning of the end for the confederacy. We walked around the riverfront and looked at the beautiful murals. Vicksburg has a great scenic route which we followed. We like Vicksburg!! Here are some pics from Vicksburg. One of these is our feet “stamping in the Mississippi mud.”
We drove along I20 which was very boring. We had a picnic lunch west of Monroe, MS at a rest stop. They don’t win any prizes for bathrooms! Yuck!
I convinced bc to get off I20 and drive 80. That took a lot longer, but was so cool. However, we drove through several small cities that were empty. Sadly empty. This is Saturday and no one was in town. I’m sorry.
It's interesting where you place your values...........
The sign here said Gas Self Service....they forgot to tell you to bring your own pump and gas.
As we were entering town, we saw several large airplanes landing. It was obvious they were military; then it became more vivid that we were watching SAC B-52’s land at Barksdale AFB…. Amazing.
We got to our hotel in Shreveport, LA. We upgraded to a suite for $20.00. bc and I agreed that we have not had this much space since, well, September 7th when we left home. Cool…
We got Kevin, the Best Western driver to drive us to the Shreveport Riverfront. We walked and walked and then came across “Joe’s Crab Shack.” (I know, I know there’s a Joe’s in old Sac, but it was crab!) It was early, 4pm, but we ordered crab and a bottle of wine and it was wonderful! Every time we eat crab we remember Lou. Thanks granddad! After a great meal, we called Kevin, he picked us up and here we are.
Kevin also told us that Elvis Presley first “came out” in Shreveport. He actually stayed at our hotel in room 502. The hotel is planning to develop a shrine at his former room…..wow, a new Elvis place to go.
We received a “free” drink coupon at our hotel. So we went to the bar and what a great anthropological study! The bartender was very busy doing paperwork, smoking and putting on her mascara…. But the poof on the top of her head made it all worthwhile. Sorta….
Another great day in the life of bc and gc…
